David Austin

DavidAustin_LiveDavid Austin is a singer/songwriter from Southwest Virginia, a region of the country that is rich in musical heritage and traditions. The sounds of Appalachian mountain folk, bluegrass, traditional country, and gospel music flourish in the area. With these influences, David developed his passion for singing at a very early age. His first public performances were in the church that his family attended. Encouraged by the congregation, he was always welcome to sing. When he did, his grandfather would stand at the back of the church with his hand cupped to his ear inviting him to sing louder. Sing louder, he did!

David was also inspired by his father who played the guitar and the banjo. Very often, he’d go to his Dad’s band practice; David would listen attentively and learn the songs. By the end of practice, he’d be singing along with the band.
In his early teens, David picked up the guitar. With the help of an inspiring guitar teacher, Mike Lee, David began to find himself musically. He knew that he had discovered something that would become a permanent part of his life. His desire to play and sing songs soon led to writing songs; and, by the time he was 16 years old, he was performing his own compositions for area churches, civic organizations, and community events. Growing up in a small, rural town, he was often invited to sing for revivals and worship services. Most of his performing experience came from standing up in front of people in church, especially his home church, Lithia United Methodist.

In 1990, David and long-time musician friend, Keith Wood put their original songs together and stepped into the studio for the first time. In one weekend, they recorded their songs to be given as gifts to friends and family. The recordings on “Think About That” became so popular in the community they had to order another shipment of tapes. That experience was so encouraging, it has led to other recordings.

In 1995, David and some of his friends, including duet partner, Leslie Dunbar, performed a Christmas concert at a local church. Little did they know that it would be the beginning of an annual event that celebrated its 12th year in 2007. These holiday concerts have become somewhat of a local tradition, that many call the “beginning of their Christmas season”.

In 2005, David Austin & Friends took home the WDBJ-7 TV “Viewers Choice Award”. Viewers voted online and chose the band as their favorite group in the competition.

Along with his songwriting, recording, and live performances, David is the choir director for Trinity United Methodist Church, a position he has held since 2003.
